Hersonissos is a small town that is located right next to the sea. It belongs to the prefecture of Heraklion just 28 km away. In the place where the town stands today, in ancient times there used to be the city or Heronissos. Its historical origins can be traced back to the Minoan period while archaeologists have found out that the city reached a peak during the Roman and early Byzantine period. In modern times, the first time that the inhabitants were officially recorded is in the census of 1900. Then there were only 133 inhabitants. Lychnostatis Cretan Open - Air Museum
Apart from the beaches and the nightlife, there are many things that one can do. An interesting place to visit is the private Aquaworld Aquarium which has been operating since 1995 by John McLaren. It can be found very close to the main road of Hersonissos. It was the first aquarium to operate in Crete and the third in Greece. In its place you will see a small collection of fish, reptiles and amphibians. Also, the Museum of Traditional Life and Popular Culture of Crete "Lychnostatis" in Hersonissos was built by the doctor and collector George Markakis in the period 1986-1992. It began its operation in 1992 as a private museum and in 1993 the Friends Association of the Museum was founded. The museum has departments of audiovisual media and publications, educational programs, traditional products and documentation.
